Join us for a reading and book signing in support of a new book by author Andrew Lawler, “Under Jerusalem: The Buried History of the World’s Most Contested City.” The event is free, in-person, with masks required at All Saints Episcopal Church in Southern Shores (40 Pintail Trail in Southern Shores) and will also be livestreamed via the Don & Catharine Bryan Cultural Series Facebook page.
The book provides a seeping history of the hidden world below the Holy City – a saga of biblical treasures, intrepid explorers, and political upheaval.

“These untold stories of archeological digs near and under Jerusalem’s sacred sites convey all the colorful and violent and contentious history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict…a compulsive read.” -Kai Bird, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and author of the Outlier.
A partnership between the Don & Catharine Bryan Cultural Series and Downtown Books brings Andrew to All Saints in Southern Shores on Wednesday, November 3, for an evening multi-visual presentation discussing his book. Under Jerusalem takes readers into the tombs, tunnels, and trenches of the Holy City. It brings to life the indelible characters who have investigated this subterranean landscape.
Andrew is the author of The Secret Token, an excellent investigation into the disappearance of the Lost Colony as well as the best-seller Why Did the Chicken Cross the World?. As a journalist, he has written more than a thousand newspaper and magazine articles from more than two dozen countries. His byline has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, National Geographic, Smithsonian, and many others.
Copies of Under Jerusalem will be available for sale at the event and Andrew will be signing books after his talk. For more information visit duckscottage.com or call 252-473-1056.
