“I wrote this as a poem for my husband and our son Archie and then turned it into a book so you can enjoy it too,” she says.
Meghan Markle may have left her acting career behind when she became a member of the royal family, but her knack for performance remains, as the Duchess of Sussex proved in an eloquent reading posted to YouTube this morning. The video, for the Brightly Storytime channel, features Meghan reading from her own children’s book, The Bench, which the duchess published earlier this year.
“I wrote this as a poem for my husband and our son Archie and then turned it into a book so you can enjoy it too,” she explains in the video. Indeed, Meghan had previously revealed that the book began as a short poem that she wrote for Prince Harry’s first Father’s Day as a dad after the birth of their son Archie in 2019. She had the poem inscribed on a plaque on a bench that she gifted to Harry, and then later expanded on the writing to create a whole book inspired by her family. In addition to the sweet subject matter, the Sussex family also features in some of the artwork for the book, illustrated by Christian Robinson, along with a few nods to other important moments for them, including an homage to Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana.
Meghan concluded her reading saying, “I hope you enjoyed The Bench, I loved being able to share it with you. And now I hope you’re able to go and find your own special bench, or chair, or little quiet nook. Just a place that means something to you to share with someone you love.”
This isn’t the only time in recent weeks that Meghan has given a reading for her book, either. In September, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex headed to a school in Harlem so that Meghan could share her book with a group of eager second graders.
