Park bookstore snags gold – Sherwood Park News

A local bookstore that has been helping Sherwood Park residents read for more than 30 years has been recognized with an online award.
The Sherwood Park Bookworm, at 120 Wye Road, was awarded gold in the 2021 bookstore category.
“We placed gold under Wee Book Inn, which placed platinum,” explained Leanne Weisgerber, owner and operator. “I’ll take it as a very big win. It is exciting to win. Gold recognition is a big thing in the bookstore business and I’m quite excited.”
The book enthusiast said she isn’t really sure how the awards worked but she asked her customers to vote for the store through a link and it seemed to catch the right traction.
Weisgerber isn’t the original owner of the store as the establishment has been around for more than three decades.
“I’ve had the store for eight-and-a-half years and we did five years in our first location but we’re now in our new location off Wye Road and we’ve been here for a few years now,” Weisgerber said. “The Sherwood Park Bookworm, was formally just, The Bookworm, for about 33 years. We tell people more than 30 years because we don’t have an exact opening date. I’m the fourth owner.”
Weisgerber said despite the myth that nobody reads books anymore, the local store has actually been doing quite well.
“Over the last eight years, we’ve seen a slow but steady increase in reading. People are going back to published books as opposed to their gadgets,” she said. “Publishers are also showing a rise in book sales so books are coming back and are steady. Over the last year during COVID we’ve seen a nice increase in sales.”
The business owner adds that although many businesses have been hit hard by the pandemic, her store has actually seen a bit of a bump. There were some snags at the start of the pandemic, when retail stores were forced to close, but with a little innovation Weisgerber said she was able to keep things going.
“We didn’t have an online store but people could message me and I’d see what inventory we had and arrange for a pickup,” she said. “We have a fabulous base of regulars and avid readers who support us.”
The bookstore, which is about 1,200 square feet, is filled with used books and it recently created an online presence as well.
“We’ve just launched a brand new website as of Oct. 1 with a store connected to it. That being said, not many books are listed yet because we have to do each individually and there is probably more than 10,000 titles in the store that will need to be listed on the website,” she said.
Weisgerber said despite being a used bookstore, you can likely find lots of the new titles you are looking for.
