Happening tonight in Midland: NEA Big Read Event to feature mixed media art and book discussion – Midland Daily News

Creative 360 and the Grace A Dow Memorial Library are co-hosting a free mixed media art and book discussion event tonight at Creative 360.
The event, “The House on YOUR Street” — set for 6 to 8 p.m. — invites participants of all ages to create a mixed media portrait of their home in their neighborhood.
The Great Lakes Bay Region NEA Big Read featured book is “The House on Mango Street” by Sandra Cisneros and all of the arts and reading events for the year will be celebrations of the Hispanic and Latinx heritage that is at the core of the book.
“’The House on Mango Street’ is a timeless story of a young Latina woman growing up in a neighborhood in Chicago,” stated Laura Vosejpka of Creative 360. “It’s a book about what really makes a neighborhood. This year we will be combining all of our book discussions with the arts and our first event is a visual arts project that asks our artists to think about what makes their own home special.”
During the arts class, Barb McIntyre of the Grace A Dow Memorial Library will share readings that describe the neighborhood that Esperanza, the book’s main character, lives in. Copies of the book, in both Spanish and English language, will be available for no cost at the event.
“Pairing art and reading makes perfect sense,” said McIntyre. “This is a very descriptive book and it will be so fun to see how everyone interprets their own home experience as compared to Esperanza’s.”
As part of this National Endowment for the Arts sponsored program, Creative 360 and the Grace A Dow Memorial Library will co-host monthly arts and reading events through Summer 2022. The next event, scheduled for Nov. 5 – will feature Latinx cooking and foods.
While all of the events are free, pre-registration is highly recommended. “The House on YOUR Street” event is appropriate for all ages, however children under age 8 should attend with an adult. Registration is available at becreative360.org/events or by calling 989-837-1885.
